Three Important Leadership Qualities

Robert Katz identified three main leadership skills every leader needs to possess. He reveals technical, human and conceptual skills are vital to any leader that wants to achieve positive outcomes at work. These skills enable leaders satisfy expectations of all stakeholders in firms they work for. This paper will discuss how leaders should use these skills to make their organizations more prosperous.

A good leader needs to have crucial technical skills to enable him or her accomplish crucial tasks effectively. A leader needs to understand techniques he needs to use to achieve good results out of a particular task. A technically competent leader knows how to deal with different technical problems that occur at work.

He also has specific technical skills suitable for the organization he works in. A technically competent leader is able to utilize his expertise to contribute positively to a firm’s progress, making it more competitive in the industry. Good leaders take time to acquire knowledge related to crucial technical systems in their firms to enable them perform their duties more effectively (Peak 45). Such leaders are able to steer their organizations in the right direction.

Human skills make a leader relate well with people he works with. This helps a leader form strong relationships with fellow employees, clients and other stakeholders in an organization. This enables a leader collaborate with other stakeholders to achieve positive results. A strong leader needs to understand the behavior of people he works with to find out how he can establish strong working relationships with them. This enables him encourage all employees to collaborate on crucial work assignments.

Therefore, this makes employees value teamwork because it enables them achieve positive results in their work duties. A leader that has good human relations skills understands workers’ needs and introduces sound policies that cater for their welfare (Peak 46). This motivates employees to work harder to achieve positive outcomes. A manager with effective human skills is able to solve disputes between different employees easily, which makes the organization more cohesive.

Conceptual skills make it possible for a leader to generate good ideas which improve internal work procedures. Leaders need to know how to apply their skills at work to enable their employees achieve good results. A competent leader generates strong ideas easily which makes internal operations in an organization more competitive. He needs to create time to understand the impact of ideas generated by different employees and their benefit to the firm’s internal operations.

A leader needs to encourage his workers to learn from their mistakes to ensure constant improvement in different work processes in the firm is achieved (Griffin and Moorehead 337). This also helps a leader set benchmarks in a firm which ensures all work processes satisfy high quality standards. A competent leader must know how to use his knowledge to coordinate different work procedures in the firm to achieve good results.

In conclusion these three qualities enable leaders perform their responsibilities more effectively. Leaders need to understand the organizational environment they are working in, to enable them understand improvements they need to make. They need to collaborate with their workers to enable them achieve positive results at work. They also need to use their technical skills to come up with effective ideas that make their organizations more competitive.
