Lighting Between Art and Science in Hotel Lobby

The design of the hotel lobby is usually developed in accordance with the standards combining aesthetics and luxury of comfort. Lighting is considered to be a very important and powerful design tool affecting the emotions and crafting the space; the appropriate development of lighting in a lobby design is one of the key tasks. Understanding the peculiarities of environmental design is to be stressed through the lighting theory applying in hotel lobby reconstructing; the purpose is to realize the significance of physical environment creation and its role in impacting the behavior of the customers.

Modern design trends and technological challenges influenced the hotel lobby decoration being presented predominantly in high-technology lighting applications and bold colors; physical environment attractiveness is closely dependant on décor and interior design of the space, producing an effect on the hotel guests through textures, colors, lighting, materials quality, and furnishing style.

The project of lobby hotel is to be based on the making the atmosphere comfortable, hospitable, and relaxing; to reach this the project is to combine the elements of two lighting theories, Color Theory and Light and Shade Theory. Color is considered to be the light property forming the center of our vision. The design of the interior inside the hotel is to reflect the features of illumination making the guests admire the combination of artificial and natural lighting stimulating the association with calmness and relaxation; it is necessary to underline the idea that the space is to be designed in calm mild tones of light, predominantly light colors to be used. It is necessary to cover the white light spectrum; the theory identifies white light ‘as a combination of primary light colors, blue, green and red, with secondary ones, covering cyan, magenta, yellow’. The lobby lighting design is to sponge the elements of Light and Shade theory; this theory gives an opportunity to demonstrate the expressive means of the interior through light and dark contrast. The usage of neutral colors in the lobby room will provide calmness and mystery in the contrast with the colors mixed. (Doty, 2007)

The development of my lobby design will be based on the principle of sustainability that is the appropriate selection of light bulbs and light fixtures necessary for lighting design maintenance. In the theory of lighting design, this notion is identified as ‘being green’; it is necessary to stress the idea that the approach to design building will be concentrated on the careful art balance, sustainability, and special focus on the pleasing environment. (Loeffler, 2007) Sustainability techniques, lights, and materials are considered to be essential in design environment building; the principle of sustainability is concentrated on making the service complying with social, economic, and ecological factors. The key intention of my lobby room design is aimed at creating sensitive design eliminating the impact of negative environmental factors on the customers’ behavior. To satisfy the needs and expectations of the hotel guests is important to create the environment through the thorough selection of the materials, techniques, and art elements. The style of design presentation will be presented in modernism reflecting the details and features of this art direction not only in decor materials by in the furniture and technological equipment. It is necessary to underline the fact that the key element is sustainability will be the light; appropriate light balancing is very important because too dark an environment can hide the sense of visibility and appropriate atmosphere perception. A lot of wooden units of furniture in the combination with light calm colors will make the lobby design meet the requirements of sustainability principles. The insertion of creative and inspiring décor elements will give an opportunity to provide some mystery to the interior design. (Jain, 2008)

In a lobby design project, it is necessary to cover the concept of universal design; this notion covers a set of principles aimed at developing and selecting the methods and techniques for the purpose of convenient environment creation; it is the design of the space without any necessity of its adaptation or special additional material. The importance of such design creation is concentrated on making the environment of the hotel lobby more usable, healthier, and safer. All these components are considered to be the background of effective environment building. The concept of universal design is not based on special standards or norms; it just follows the concept of usability. The interior design is to be associated with the principle of accessibility; it means that the space can be adapted to changes and can experience typical designing practices. It is considered to be very important to make the room be accessible to transformations on the independent level. The concept is closely connected with ADA and ABA (Architectural Barriers Act) accessibility guidelines to be reflected in the design. The lack of accessibility in the design building is characterized by the disability of the occupants. (Proposed ADA Standards for Accessible Design. 2005). To meet the standards of these rules, the hotel is to have lowering counters, widening doorways, ramping entrances, modified storage, and door loop-style hardware. This will make the hotel more sustainable and usable by all the population layers meeting the requirements regarding physical and emotional conditioning. It is important to take into account the accessibility to the service of disabled people, as it will make the hotel atmosphere comfortable. (Accessible Home Design. 2009)

The creation of a relaxing environment in the lobby is connected with transformed functions of this room; the lobby is not perceived as an ordinary waiting room; it is the epicenter of the hotel that is why relaxing conditions are created for the guests to settle business problems, have a drink or eat, or just gather in a social setting. The term of lighting flexibility, as well as multi-function, was derived from the hotel quests’ needs which are concentrated on making the lobby to be a place for working, socializing, and relaxing, reached through the warm atmosphere. The creation of lighting style should be formed in accordance with the demands of the clients; the lobby is to be visually divided into several parts, providing some space for business and some for relax and having a drink (closer to a lounge). So, the multiple zones are to have the following: Business, Relaxing and Individual, which are situated with the same space of the lobby. A relaxing environment will give an opportunity to have calm and just relax within an intimate lounge area, while the next zone is to be picked up with the terms for social interaction and private media center. (Transforming the Idea of the Hotel Lobby. 2009).

The possibility given through such design is aimed at allowing the guests to create a personal experience; the basic task for lobby designing is to make it multifunctional through the lighting and furniture. It is necessary to underline the fact that the lobby is to be a part of the luxury lounge for the guests to enjoy their time and spend relaxing moments. The bright lighting is to be presented in the business area making the environment conducive to work and interpersonal cooperation. It is to be adapted to high-speed internet usage and deals settlements; in the evening this business area is to be easily transformed into the rest space through the softer glow, creating the atmosphere for worm social ambiance and relaxing of the guests. (Markowitz, 2007)

The analysis of various design approaches demonstrated the elements contributing to great hotel lobby creation; taking into account materials, decor units, lighting, style, and texture is considered to be an integral part of design development. Working out the lobby project, one should take into account dramatic lighting creating a relaxing environment, the usage of art pieces, furniture, and technological equipment. (Gale, 2009)

The theoretical analysis of lighting concepts identified the role of colors and shadows in design building; it is necessary to stress that the interior is closely connected with the customers’ behavior and feeling stimulation. The development of design is to be compulsorily built on the lighting concepts, sustainability, and accessibility impacting the effectiveness of the interior. One of the central tasks in lobby design creation is concentrated on the analysis of its functions and expectations of the customers;the peculiarities realization of the environmental design was stressed through the lighting theory applying in hotel lobby reconstructing.
