Abstract
The introduction and use of modern technology in teaching is an indispensable aspect as proved by various researches conducted in different learning institutions in Singapore and the United States. The need to involve teachers and other key stakeholders in introducing and implementing policies regarding technology use in learning is unquestionable. Teachers play important roles in ensuring learners embrace novel practices in learning. However, very few governments consider them to be important in implementing their policies, and this explains why most initiatives to improve learning have failed miserably.
The theoretical frameworks that inform this idea are that teachers use technology in most of their daily activities; therefore, it is imperative to introduce its use in learning. Secondly, nations are ready to offer support to introduce digital learning systems. On the other hand, there is a huge gap between policymakers and implementers, and this makes it difficult to use modern technology in learning. The results of the study proved that Common Core Standards were ignored in the process of introducing new media and technology usage in learning institutions. Policymakers have ignored the roles of teachers in ensuring novel practices in learning succeed.
Technology and Education
Academicians like Pepper argue that students’ learning processes are not influenced by modern technology and innovations like Web 1.0 or Web 2.0. They believe that the need to introduce modern technology and new media in learning is a slow and gradual process, and nobody should try to force it. In addition, they claim that learning is a process that evolves at its own pace, and any attempt to speed this process will create conflicts in schools and colleges. Fischer and Silven believe that the psychological development of students initiates the need for modern technology in learning. They believe that teachers should use technology properly to ensure they enhance learning.
Anderson (2007), and Johnson, Levine, and Smith (2009), identified new media technologies as the tools that enhance teaching and learning. In today’s innovative and technologically advanced world, the internet and instant communication are essential for everyday life. Knowledge is evolving at a fast rate; many changes have come so fast that we need time to comprehend fully what we should adopt and how they can affect our lives. It is important to understand that the workplaces are becoming more dependent on knowledgeable and technologically efficient staff because of the introduction and use of innovations and transformations.
There is a big shift from the slow-paced Newtonian world to the fast-paced, Quantum- based informational world (Wheatley, 1992). The introduction and use of modern technology in learning cannot be stopped. In addition, the needs of society are changing, and this means that there should be new approaches that will help people to improve their standards of living.
Newtonian understandings of the world have influenced scientific and ever-evolving technological methods for understanding organizations (Wheatley 1992). For instance, Wheatley (1992) in her book “Leadership and the New Science” explained Newtonian science as a science of the machine that has changed over time into present Quantum Science. Therefore, people should embrace the use of modern technology in learning and ensure they identify key stakeholders in this field.
This change from no connection Newtonian to more connected Quantum model influences humans and organizations because they are virtually connected through new technologies (McDaniel, 2004; Price, 1997). The study proves that future research in this area should be done to identify the roles of all stakeholders in ensuring the successful use of modern technology in learning.
