Politics through good governance has been cited as the main element in building an ethical society. Although a relative phenomenon, the ruling class is required to develop strategies to instill in its populace the right forms of knowledge. The question of the best form of government depends on the ‘telos’ of the government of the time. The purpose of any government is to offer functional knowledge based on empirical and rational elements. It should be a practical form of knowledge whose ultimate objective is to aid citizens in understanding the government initiatives. It is now common knowledge that the ends results of any system are the best way of testing its ‘telos’. Citizens can only live a completely fulfilled life when the government through its systems provides the necessary goods for good living. Human beings have always been looking for ultimate happiness which is only available when goods that satisfy their happiness are provided. A good government needs to provide opportunities for the citizens to rise above their personal and household needs to become politically active. More important is the provision of knowledge to the people for empowerment that allows for full participation in the development of the nation. The government has to develop the urge for the search for knowledge and open up such avenues for its people.
Some of the available forms of government include democracy, aristocracy, monarchs, and mixed forms of government. The mixed constitution form of government is the best form of government in instilling ethics in the current society. It may be described generally as a fusion of oligarchy and democracy, however; it tends to incline more towards democracy. It provides for good governance by ensuring the development of good laws and ensuring they are obeyed. The inclusion of the most qualified as part of the ruling class ensures that people’s such for knowledge is not compromised. This search for knowledge is meant to allow them to gain leadership and rule. The involvement of the people in selecting their representative who team up with those selected based on their qualifications ensures that the will of the people is taken care of. The mixed approach provides a direct link between the laws and the citizens. Other than the mixed approach, there is democracy which refers to a form of government in which the majority are the sovereign. This is where, as argued by Aristotle the free who are mostly the poor and the majority govern. To them, the state is established to supply the necessities to the people. Democracy is based on equality where both the rich and the poor have an equal contribution. The critiques have argued that this form of governance puts the government in the hands of people who are least capable of making any sound decision. Aristocracy refers to a form of government in which the best men are given an opportunity to rule. The assumption is that these intelligent people are also good citizens. The interest is not on the society’s set virtues but on educated men selected on merit and reputation for leadership. They are expected to be highly intelligent and educated as well as brave and temperate. The critiques argue that it gives too much power to the rich and elites at the expense of the people. Monarchs, on the other hand, refer to some form of government where leadership is hereditary and power is only relinquished through death or otherwise one rules forever. It leads to poor management and dictatorial makes it not liked.
In conclusion, it can be said that nations should strive to put in place measures that allow a level of limited democracies. The people should be allowed to democratically select the best people to run the government with a mix of the most qualified citizens both morally and intellectually.
