Bio-Engineered and Natural Foods

The reality nowadays is full of information about what people eat in everyday life. Their concern is even higher when the story touches upon labeling their favorite goods and finding on them the warning of genetically engineered crops or ingredients in a product. This theme is outlined into a great discussion about all sides of the possible use or dangers of bio-engineered and natural foods. The paper is intended to point out and weigh pros and cons considering the current situation in the food market of the world and the USA, in particular.

The thing is that the perpetual increase of the world population and the achievements of the science and technological progress made scholars drive all the mechanisms for the improvement of the situation. In this respect the need to supply population with food became vital for the world community. Scholars more and more implement the technologies and innovations in the genetic engineering. Indeed, the situation may not be so hazardous for the world and especially for the poorest countries of it due to the current use of bio-engineered products.

On the other hand, the concern of people about natural food becomes higher and higher because of lack of knowledge about the consequences of genetically engineered food. Still there is no true evidence of how genetically modified (GM) food may be dangerous or not for human beings? On the other side, the prospects of natural food are clear, but people have no idea of what they eat. It is necessary to underline the motives of researchers when modifying food genetically.

First, GM crops are more resistant to known herbicides and parasites (Chiras 85). It is vital to make a note that plants are constantly suffering from various negative factors, such as herbicides and insects. It is emphasized also with migrations of earlier incompatible species of plants or living beings in a particular territory. With a historical flow such transformations caused, for example, decrease of potato crops in Europe after transfer of Colorado potato beetle. Second, bio-engineered food helps to reconstruct former lost species of plants due to nanotechnologies (Chiras 86). Also due to genetic engineering crops may increase in the volumes of harvest worldwide as well as cattle may give more meat and milk.

On the other hand, there is constant evidence of cancer emerging after allegedly using bio-engineered crops. Though, scientific community cannot answer this question categorically due to the unexplored nature of suchlike products. Nonetheless, there is a great discussion in the society according to the ethical side of GM food. Most of the people think that cattle and plants are not a machine for genetic experiments. Moreover, nature is a balanced system, and if one wants to destruct its organization then there may appear inconvertible consequences for peoples’ health (Environmental Issues, 2009). Thereupon, society is eager to be out of GM food use.

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are still emphasized as dangerous for people, but scientists are intended to find out more evidence for future vital approaches for such food because of the natural decrease of crops and the increase of people. Natural food is, of course, more useful for people, but it needs protection from the negative factor on ecology. This is why there is still no guarantee of whether there is a big difference between natural and bio-engineered food.
